Trimontium Museum
Trimontium is a 5-star visitor attraction (VisitScotland) and an award-winning museum dedicated to the Romans in Scotland and the dynamic Iron Age landscape. Honoured with prestigious Thistle Awards, including Best Visitor Attraction in the South of Scotland and the National Inclusive Tourism Award, Trimontium offers an unforgettable journey into Scotland’s ancient past.
Nestled in the charming town of Melrose, Trimontium houses one of the largest collections of Roman military artefacts in Britain. Through stunning audio-visuals, visitors can explore life at the very edge of the Roman Empire.
Predating Hadrian’s Wall by 40 years, Trimontium was Scotland’s largest and longest-occupied cavalry fort, a testament to the Empire’s northern frontier. Excavated between 1905–1910 by local solicitor and antiquarian James Curle, the site revealed over 100 pits and wells brimming with Roman artefacts—from domestic items to cavalry and military equipment. Archaeological investigations continue, uncovering new insights into this fascinating period.
Groups can explore the museum and join guided walks to the fort site, experiencing the breath-taking Scottish Borders landscape while uncovering its rich history. Tailored experiences include expert-led gallery tours and unique Hands-on-History sessions, where visitors can handle authentic Roman artefacts. Our immersive virtual reality experience transports guests back in time, allowing them to step inside the fort as it once stood. Seasonal talks and workshops are available, while children can enjoy interactive activities, crafts, and a dress-up corner. The museum also features a gift shop with Roman-themed souvenirs and books.
Melrose boasts quaint cafés, unique shops, and nearby attractions, with the St Cuthbert’s Way passing through town; the perfect destination for history lovers and explorers alike.
